A Day Trip For Every Season

Spring and summer is peak season for western NC. Many people flood this area to beat the heat of the flatlands in the cities and take in the fresh mountain air.  Transylvania County receives an average of 90 inches of rain yearly, making it the wettest county in NC.  However, don’t let that scare you away!  The vortex tunnels of green are worth the risk of a passing shower.  Rain comes and goes quickly in these parts during the warm seasons.  The blue skies, nice temperatures, and foliage galore make this area an idyllic destination.  Looking Glass turns into a sought after swimming hole on most warm summer days.  Be sure to experience the magic with a cold water plunge!

Leaf season is a sight to behold! As the days grow shorter and the leaves begin to turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow, there’s no better time to chase waterfalls and submerge yourself in the breathtaking beauty of autumn.  Furthermore, the crisp cool air is often much deserving respite from the heat of summer.  One thing to note, October is the high season, which makes it a popular Asheville, NC day trip destination.   That being said, a morning visit is usually best.

Ah… the peacefulness of winter in the Blue Ridge Mountains.  Winter is the quieter season and oftentimes offers cheaper room rates, fewer crowds, and great long range mountain views.  Western NC offers a mild winter season compared to other mountain destinations.  Most winter days are sunny, crisp, and cool.  Oftentimes, large icicles form on the rock outcroppings.  Each season offers something special to see.  Dress in layers and take in the winter wonderland of Looking Glass Falls!

Final Thoughts

Why not escape the hustle and bustle of the city with a day trip immersed in nature?  A visit to Looking Glass Falls anytime of year is sure to delight your senses.  I’d like to wrap up by sharing a little story with you.  Over 15 years ago, I stumbled upon this neck of the woods while searching for a mountain biking summer vacation.  We spent the week riding single track, camping at the Davidson River, and exploring the quaint town of Brevard, NC.  Additionally, we found ourselves visiting many local swimming holes and waterfalls in the area.

One late afternoon, after hours of mountain biking fun, we found ourselves at the iconic Looking Glass Falls.  While swimming in the pool of fresh mountain water, a local talked to us about swimming behind the base of the falls.  I will never forget swimming up towards the falls and plunging myself into the cascade of water.  Standing behind the flow of water and gazing through the falls towards the sunlight was a magical experience.  In fact, I often say, that was the moment that Pisgah Forest took my heart via Looking Glass Falls!  Undoubtedly, I was standing on sacred ground while experiencing a moment of unforgettable bliss!
