History of Graveyard Fields
Are you a history buff? If so, buckle up! Graveyard Fields holds several theories regarding the origin of its name. More than likely, many factors are probably at play related to the history of this beautiful area.
Devastating Windstorm
One common theory is that the area was severely damaged by a windstorm in the early 20th century. These storms knocked down many large trees. The once lush dense forest gave way to a sparse woodland of large stumps and dead trees. These remnants of trees became covered in moss and resembled a graveyard, hence the name.
Catastrophic Fires:
Catastrophic fires impacted the area in 1925 and then again in the early 1940’s. The inferno swept through the land, which destroyed most of the leftover stumps and trees. In addition, the soil scorched so badly that it was found to be sterile.
Excessive Logging:
Furthermore, in the early 20th century, the surrounding forests were heavily logged for their valuable timber resources. This logging activity resulted in the barren landscape that gave rise to the “graveyard” appearance.
***During a reforestation effort of the 1930’s, the U.S. Forest Service initiated improvements to the area. Many fir and spruce trees were planted. These trees have since grown to maturity. Thank you U.S Forest Service for your care and dedication to our natural resources!!
Graveyard Fields Logistics
Located along the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina, Graveyard Fields is easily accessible from Asheville, making it an ideal day trip or weekend getaway. The trailhead can be found at milepost 418.8 on the Parkway. Ample parking is available, but be sure to arrive early during peak fall foliage season, as this area tends to get quite popular. Additionally, this trailhead is one of the few in the area to have a restroom, which is always a nice amenity.
Graveyard Fields offers a variety of hiking options suitable for all skill levels. One of the most popular trails is the Graveyard Fields Loop Trail, a moderate 3.2-mile loop that takes you through an enchanted forest filled with rhododendron thickets, gentle streams, and the famous blueberry bushes that turn fire engine red in the fall.
Characteristics of Hiking Graveyard Fields
The magic of Graveyard Fields truly comes alive in the fall months. Here’s what you can expect:
Vibrant Fall Colors: The foliage in Graveyard Fields explodes with vibrant colors in the fall. The hardwood trees that surround the fields transform into a colorful palette of red, orange, and yellow. The contrast against the dark evergreens is stunning.
Wild Blueberry: Graveyard Fields is known for its many blueberry bushes. In late summer and early autumn, the berries are ripe for picking. It is common during this time to see many folks picking baskets of blueberries while enjoying their hike. If, by chance, you miss the window for picking and eating, no worries! The brilliant red color of the blueberry foliage is quite the gift to behold as well!
Waterfall Attractions: About halfway through the loop trail, you’ll encounter Lower Falls, a beautiful 20-foot waterfall. It’s a perfect spot to take a break, take pictures, and soak in the peaceful atmosphere. The sound of rushing water combined with the fall colors and fresh air make it an experience of the senses.
Wildlife: Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife. You may spot deer, squirrels, and various bird species going about their autumn routines. The cool, crisp air seems to excite the forest’s occupants, making wildlife encounters more likely.
