Autumn Equinox Meditation To Make Space For A NEW You!

Welcome Autumn!  A time for golden landscapes, oversized hoodies, and local apple orchards. As well as football games, evenings around a firepit, and fresh starts!  As a yoga teacher, I love to sequence classes around the seasons of the year.  Therefore, I thought it only fitting to write and record a guided  autumn equinox meditation to share on my little space on the internet.

As the cooler air begins to roll in, a natural nesting of sorts seems to follow many of us, me included.  Personally, by September I always feel as if it is my last hurrah of the year.  In other words, improve it, complete it, or scrap it! With all these thoughts in my awareness, I decided to put pen to paper for a short meditation.  Additionally, I have included some fun fall facts and rituals and my favorite apple spiced granola recipe!   Enjoy this blog post!

Autumn Equinox and the Cosmos

Saturday, September 23, 2023, marks the arrival of the autumn equinox and the first day of fall for the Northern Hemisphere.  In addition, this is one of two times of the year, spring being the other, in which the sun is exactly above the equator and daylight and darkness are equal. The sun crosses the celestial equator to usher in the new season of autumn.

Autumn. A time for self-reflection,  regaining clarity,  inner-balance, and releasing the things that no longer serves us.  Essentially, making space for opportunities by releasing the things that no longer fulfill us!  It is also a time for honoring the abundance that was while trusting in the bounty to be.

Autumn Traditions and Rituals

  • Spending time in nature!  Taking in the views, breathing in the smells, and feeling all the feels!
  • Gathering up fresh herbs, wildflowers, grapes and berries.
  • Making seasonal crafts such as pumpkin carving, wreath making, and centerpieces.
  • Fall Cleaning! Declutter, donate, and organize your home!
  • Go to a local high school football game.  Support your community and feel the excitement!
  • Light a candle, incense, or herbs.  Clearing the air with seasonal smells just feels good!
  • Prepare a nourishing fall meal.  Think carrots, sweet potatoes, leafy greens, and baked apples!
  • Visit a local farm, orchard, or farmers’ market.
  • Enjoy as many sunsets as possible!
  • Sit by a firepit in the early evening.  Smore’s anyone?
  • Open your windows and enjoy the fresh, cool air!
  • Take time for self-awareness, reflection, and gratitude.

Why Meditate On The Autumn Equinox?

The practice of meditation is beneficial anytime of year. Sitting with one’s self while being completely present is a gift of self-care. However, in our fast-paced, action-focused society, it can be tough to make time for these important moments.

Use the uniqueness of the autumn equinox to give yourself permission to sit with yourself.  The first day of autumn, a day that the Earth rests in perfect balance and harmony just as we strive for stability and steadfastness  in our own lives.  Additionally, give gratitude to your summer harvest as well as gratitude to yourself.

I wish you an autumn season full of fall colors, crisp mornings, and warm apple cider! Enjoy my short autumn equinox meditation video from my greenhouse below. 15 Minute Autumn Equinox Meditation

Just a few things to remember when practicing meditation. First, meditation is a skill which will improve with practice. Second, distractions are normal and will probably occur. If your mind begins to wonder, just redirect it back to your breath. This will become easier with practice. Meditation is still beneficial.

Another thing to consider, meditation is not something we “do”. We “drop-into” or “slide-into” meditation. Try to release the mind from problem solving or overfocusing on details.

Final Thoughts

I hope this short autumn equinox meditation resonated with you while also providing a sense of calm.  Feel free to download the printable script above and share it as you wish.  Wishing you an autumn season loaded with all things that bring you joy!  See you in the next post!
